Summary
Introduction: Staff support groups are listed in the bibliographical data search as a method of dealing with the psychological burden of staff working in the health sector, especially in hospitals. Aim: The aim of this study is to examine staff support groups influence in dealing with the psychological burden of personnel in hospitals. Material and Methods: A bibliographical data search of published English and Greek articles was conducted using bibliographic databases PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Iatrotek on- line and the National Archive of PhD Τheses (Didaktorika.gr) for the period 2009-2014, using the following keywords in combination: "Hospital staff", "support groups", "stress", "burnout", "health workers”. Out of 791 results (titles and abstracts) initially identified, only 18 were related and finally included in this study. The limited number of articles led to the extension of the research in the references of the 18 original articles with simultaneous enlargement of the time search period starting in 2000. This way, 41 more articles were identified of which 18 were related and used in this study. Results: Staff support groups were found to have a positive effect on staff’s level of stress and burnout. Conclusions: Staff support groups were found to have a positive effect on staff’ s level of stress and burnout. Conducting more randomized controlled studies concerning the effects of staff support groups programs in compliance with minimum scientific criteria could lead to conclusions to be applied in a more general framework.
