It was found that almost all the cold spells were due to the moving anticyclones, mostly cold, which appear in the NE Atlantic, around and over the British Isles, Scandinavia and NNW Europe. In addition the coldest spells of each of the autumn months were studied in detail and especially the cold spells of November 1915 and 1948, during which the phenomenon of "arctic sea-smoke" took place. © 1953 Springer-Verlag." }
