TODO - The chapter introduces the readers to the notion of ‘cultural variable’, namely, the fact that certain pragmatic features in discourse may vary cross-culturally and shape discourses in particular ways, which are manifested through translation. One of the pragmatic variables, the manifestation of which the book examines, may be the relational dynamics between interlocutors, as manifested in discourse cross-culturally or across communities of practice. Another variable may be certain socio-historical values which discourses and communities of practice may treat differently cross-culturally. The chapter sets the research questions which the volume addresses, highlights the genres and language combinations the volume researches and summarizes the contributions authors make to this volume. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
