Περίληψη:
This paper undertakes an effort to highlight the full range of implications of
transnational organized crime in Europe in the contemporary globalized context.
Through a combination of theoretical models and historical information we
attempt to bring forward the reasons for the variations of degrees and
characteristics of criminal activity throughout the continent. We examine the
origins of organized crime and put emphasis on the Western Balkans as a region
with increased importance for the proliferation of the phenomenon. The role of
the European Union as the most dynamic factor in the process of containing
organized crime is thoroughly analyzed. Finally, by utilizing statistical data
we attempt to make connections between the fight against organized crime,
European integration and the prospect of Western Balkans’ EU accession
potentiality.
