Summary:
Introduction-Aim
Claudins , members of an important family of transmembrane proteins,
participate to the formation of tight junctions. Spermatogenesis is one of the
principal functions that claudins take part, with an obscure role.
Materials-Methods
102postmortem human testes were biopsied and microscopic study revieled
histopathological findings. Immunohistochemistry for the antibodies of
Claudin-1 and Claudin-7 was applied. The results were correlated with
histopathological, morphological, aging and environmental parameters.
Results
Claudin-1 and Claudin-7 are expressed in testis, in a specific location and
intense. Statistically important correlations were calculated concerning the
expression of the two proteins among them. The extension and intense of
Claudin-7 (as a trend for Claudin-7) was statistically correlated with
spermatogenetic arrest (p=0.048).Statistically important correlations were also
reveled between the expression of Claudins and manydefects of the spermatic
wall, the interstitial tissue and postmortem findings.
Conclusions
The exact location of Claudin-1 and -7 on the spermatic tubule was showed and
their involvement in spermatogenetic failure. For the first time, Claudin-7 and
Claudin-1, were detected onhuman testes. A targeted pharmacological approach to
male subfertility, through substances that modifie these Claudins as basic
components of the tight junctions and a possible use in controlling with safety
the male contraception, can be speculated.
