ABSTRACT

This research studies interfamily relationships and the psycho-emotional
development of children, born after IVF treatment. The key objectives of the
study were:
To study the psychological and emotional profile of IVF adolescents
and compare them with matched adolescents, born after spontaneous conception
(SC). How the children see themselves, how their parents do and how their
teachers.
To investigate the dynamics of the family, after IVF treatment.
To describe the relationship and the parent-child bonding, during
adolescence and whether there are any differences because of the way of
conception.
To detect stress levels during the exercise of parental function.
To define whether IVF parents have revealed or not, the "secret" of
conception, to their children.
To suggest future interventions, in regard to parenthood preparation
of infertile couples who wish to become parents.
The sample consisted of 50 couples who had enrolled and successfully completed
(by the birth of a child)a fertility treatment program in the IVF
unit,between1996-2000.
Questionnaires and semi-structured, face - to-face interviews with the IVF
parents were used as research tools. The findings of this study indicate that
all mean scores of adolescents’ born after IVF as well asthe control group
(spontaneous conception), were found to be within normal range, which means an
overall favorable behavioral and emotional functioning in both groups. The study
findings confirm a growing body of research regarding the overall positive
adjustment and functioning, of families created through IVF, during adolescence.
