Self-assembly in the aqueous solution of amphiphilic block copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide)
Summary:
ic polymerization is the oldest known controllable polymerization methodology
leading to well defined macromolecules. It has been also successfully used for
the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers –AmBC, a group of functional
copolymers which exhibit interesting self-assembly characteristics and great
potentials for applications in several technological fields. The use of
mild/moderate and effective post polymerization chemical functionalization
reactions to block copolymers has increased the synthetic capabilities of the
anionic polymerization methodologies, regarding the creation of plethora of
AmBC. In the current dissertation, a review of the work that has been carried
out in the field for the past ten years is attempted, the synthesis and
characterization of novel amphiphilic block copolymers based on poly(ethylene
oxide) are presented as well as their self-assembly characteristics in aqueous
solutions. In the first system, the insertion of polar groups in poly (isoprene
-b- ethylene oxide) copolymer is attempted in order to change the
hydrophilicity of one block and the study of the clusters formed in aqueous
solutions. In the second system, the insertion of fluorinated groups in poly
(isoprene -b- ethylene oxide) is attempted with a view to changing the
hydrophobicity of one block and the study of the clusters formed in aqueous
solution and in the presence of a surfactant. In the third system, poly
(ethylene oxide -b- ε - caprolactone) copolymer is synthesized and studied both
in aqueous solutions and in the presence of a surfactant.
