Public image and user communities of the home computers in greece, 1980-1990
Summary:
This study examines the processes that formulated certain standards of use for
home microcomputers in the Greek society of the 1980s, as presented in the
specialised periodicals of that era. The central issues under research concern
the standards of use of home micros by Greek users and the negotiation between
social groups that established them. The study also focuses on whether the
procedures that established those standards were mediated by social actors and
if so, by whom and in what way. The existence of user communities in the Greek
socio-technical environment is also studied, along with their formulation,
their characteristics and the possibility of coformulation of computer
technology by Greek users. Moreover, the shift of the use of the computer
technology, from large corporations and the state, to the personal and home
users is examined. The characteristics of the presentation of the home computer
technology in the public space of that period is finally explored.
