The photography in Greek journals for engineers and industry.
Summary:
The PhD focused on the study of photos hosted in technical and finance
journals. More specifically, the focus is on appearance and image resolution
referred to social issues - industrial interest (Chapter 4) and images covering
technology issues as viewed from the photographic archive of Greek Electricity
Company, Electricity Company of Athens-Piraeus Public Power and the Public
Power Corporation (chapter. 5). These files were imported into the narrative
almost coincidentally, since research in the beginning I thought that would be
enough to only focus on the use of photographs from magazines of the community
of Greek engineers in the period 1899-1967. These were the main sources of
reading, or rather the images hosted on them, from the first appearance of the
magazine Archimedes January 1899 (covering the three periods appearance: from
1899 until December 1925, by March 1934 until 1938, and the only issue
1947-March). The magazine Projects (June 1925 - December 1932) and the
Technical Time (January 1932-December 1967). Magazines engineers out in the
sixth chapter. Moreover, in a separate subsection (6b) introduces the history
of the use of images and ads with technological content, as presented in the
journal Industrial Review (July 1934 - December 1967), which is a journal that
recorded extensively the relationship between industry, technology and society
in Greece. The fourth chapter on industrial photography was the introduction in
how to design subsequent chapters, which attempt to cover the same subject with
reference images from photographic records whether they are organizations or
magazines. Here's what I focused on photographing technologies from the
archives of electric companies acted or act in Athens Greece: the Greek
Electricity Company, the Electricity Company of Athens-Piraeus and the Public
Power Corporation. And this refers to the same period (1900 to 1967). The time
limit was set arbitrarily at first but the way it seemed that the period until
the end - at least until today - abolition of monarchy in Greece, during the
1967-1974 dictatorship, it shapes the pictorial scene and provide a consistent
pattern of aesthetic images as forms of people and machines presented by the
year 1967. Moreover, the emergence and introduction of television in the 1960s
defines the use of photography as a privileged object access in the past. In
general relationship between historiography and photography in international
and Greek cases admitted chapters 1, 2 and 3. Terminal, in the last chapter I
gather some explanatory remarks, combining the primary material presented in
chapters 4-6 and some of the historiographical issues introduced in Chapters
1-3.
