Summary:
In this dissertation, I present my study on dimensions of the history of the
adaptation of electronics technology in Greek military aviation projects. I am
specifically interested in the adaptation of electronics in the context of
Greek military aviation projects. My focus is on the avionics – electronics
relationship within technical protocols during the contract phase. As I argue,
this phase shaped the Greek military aviation projects.
I divide the period under consideration into three sub-periods: 1974-1987,
1987-2002 and 2002 up to the present. My thesis focuses on the critical years
1974-2002.
The description of the formation of the Greek aviation military project
(technological change) is focused on the perspective of how the use of the
adopted technology linked, de-linked and re-linked the Greek air doctrine and
the relationships of the militant participants with other relevant actors. This
history takes into account the competition between technical protocols of USA
and Europe, and, also, the competition among various European states in the
armament field. It is concerned with aspects of the history of the
appropriation of aviation electronics and related technologies in Greece, as a
result of initiatives connected to the military – industry - political –
economic complex.
I divide the history of the adaptation of electronics technology in the Greek
military aviation projects into three sub-periods in order to show the pattern
of continuity in the adaptation issues, which suggests that there was no break
at all in the chain of errors that occurred during the whole period. Within a
scheme of expanded reproduction of the technical protocols competition during
the contract phase of each project, I find that the adaptation of electronics
technology in Greek military aviation projects has been shaped by the initial
contract rather than the capability of the actors involved.
