Summary:
Modern biodiversity research relies more than ever on producing, sharing and
reusing digital data, yet, sound data management and data publication are still
not a part of the normal scientific workflow. This thesis answers specific
scientific questions in the field of taxonomy and ecology, supported by
existing and newly developed tools and methods from the field of biodiversity
informatics and cybertaxonomy and thus demonstrate the value of appropriate
data management and publication for cutting-edge research outputs. The first
part of this thesis aims at facilitating and accelerating traditional taxonomic
research: from the description and publication of a new species through a
virtual research environment to the creation of three-dimensional digital
morphological and anatomical data, and the concept of virtual type material,
so-called “cybertypes”. The second part of this thesis concerns the creation,
management and analysis of species ' biological trait s information. A
semantically annotated database on traits information was created and its
information used in an ecological study, demonstrating the value of such
information towards gaining new ecological insights. Finally, a number of
future challenges are identified, which need to be addressed by the
biodiversity informatics community to make best use of the existing and newly
created data.
