Summary:
PURPOSE: Evaluation of distress, anxiety and depression in hematological
patients undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). MATERIAL -
METHOD: The sample of the study consisted of 39 haematological patients
undergoing HSCT in a General hospital of Attica and met the entry criteria in
research. The data were collected by completing a questionnaire, which included
the tool «Emotion Thermometers» and specially designed questions to assess
mental health. The questionnaire was given in two time phases, once at the
import of patients in hospital (baseline measurement) and the next, the day
they were discharged after the completion of the transplant process. RESULTS:
The majority of patients before transplantation experienced moderate distress
and anxiety (55.35% and 71.0% respectively), while no levels of depression
where recorded. After transplantation, there was an increase in the levels of
depression and 31% of patients experienced moderate levels. A statistically
significant increase in the use of anxolytic drugs was recorded during
transplantation (78.6% compared with the baseline measurement of 21.4%)
(p-value<0.001). Regarding the demographic characteristics, it was found that
there is statistically significant correlation between gender and occupation
and distress levels (p-value <0.001 & p-value = 0.004, respectively), and
anxiety (p-value = 0.026 & p-value = 0.044 respectively). Statistically
significant correlation was also found between depression and occupation
(p-value = 0.045) and residence (p-value <0.001). Moreover, it was found that
the duration of hospitalization major influence distress levels (p-value =
0.027), while the need for help and communication significant effect on the
levels of depression (p-value <0.004 & p-value <0.001 respectively).
CONCLUSIONS: The systematic screening of distress, anxiety and depression
should be an integral part of the treatment of hematological patients
undergoing HSCT.
