Summary:
The paper attempts a first general evaluation of the structure, function,
service, and alertness of the Emergency Departments of Military Hospitals.
For the purpose of this study the Emergency Departments of four Military
Hospitals were evaluated. The respective Heads (or Interim Heads) were
interviewed A structured questionnaire of forty four (44) questions was used,
in order to identify and evaluate issues in the structure, function, services
and alertness of these types of medical institutions.
After assessment of the four Emergency Departments, accessibility for patients
proves to be in good standing. Medical services, are also considered
satisfactory. However inefficiencies appear in areas like accessibility for
patients to drinkable water and WC, differentiation in accessibility between
pedestrian patients and patients in stretchers , etc. Readiness in coping with
mass loss and injury is high, as far as the use of related plans is concerned,
however there are problems in its maintenance.
The high level of the infrastructure and services of the Emergency Departments
in Military Hospitals is apparent. An improvement in coping with mass loss and
injury is though necessary. The Emergency Departments as well as the other
premises of Military Hospitals could unload a significant burden from the
respective general public hospitals and departments, such an initiative though
could potentially endanger their own readiness and alertness.
