Summary:
The topic of this paper is principles of stress management in Delphic maxims.
Specifically, the Delphic maxims as a body of ancient dictums contain a
complete moral humanistic approach that had promoted mental health in
antiquity. The discipline of positive psychology is used as a bridge between
modern psychology and the psychologic principles contained in Delphic maxims.
The purpose of this study is to cite the aggregate Delphic maxims and dictums
of the seven wise men of antiquity, to highlight mental health skills contained
in them, to connect them with the philosophical reflections contained in modern
principles of positive psychology and the theory of positive emotions and
highlight, finally, their contribution to aggregate stress management skills.
Therefore, the ancient dictums of the seven wise men of antiquity and the
Delphic maxims are recorded and studied according to the principles and
theories of positive psychology and stress management. The method used was
based on multiple readings of the maxims which were categorized according to
the principles of positive psychology. According to the results of this study
98 maxims from 147 Delphic maxims are relative to stress management when
categorized according to positive psychology principles. In conclusion, Delphic
maxims represent early principles promoting mental health and stress management
in antiquity.
