Αυτοκτονικότητα σε ασθενείς με ενδοκρινολογικές διαταραχές

Summary:
Objective: Psychic disorders and specially depression, are common symptoms of
endocrinological diseases. This study reviews suicidality in patients who
suffer from psychiatric symptoms due to endocrinological disease, and patients
who have hypothalamus-pituitary axis disorders as a consequence of a
psychiatric disease. Cholesterol as a metabolic index of suicidal behavior is
also studied.
Method: We performed a review of the literature on suicide attempts, suicidal
behavior and completed suicides. Our search of the literature was performed on
Medline, from 1969 to 2012. We searched for studies of suicidal behavior in
endocrinological diseases, interpretation of its presence, attempts to predict
it and suggested treatments for it.
Results: Patients suffering from adrenal, thyroid, gonadal disorders and
diabetes mellitus, have high prevalence of depression and suicidal behavior as
a consequence of its presence. Depression is strongly associated with disorder
of the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, whose function is of strong predictive
value for suicidal behavior. Low cholesterol is strongly associated with
suicidality.
Conclusions: Patients suffering from endocrinological diseases should be
screened for the presence of depression and suicidal ideation. The function of
the hypothalamus-pituitary axis-which is commonly disturbed in
depression-could, in combination with other social, metabolic or biological
factors contribute to the prognosis of suicide. The management of psychiatric
symptoms with hormones and medication or other procedures which focus on the
endocrinological disorders, is a valuable therapeutic option.
