Summary:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to show the relationship between suicidal
mood
and behaviour regarding patients with neoplastic disease (cancer), as this has
been recorded in
researches and studies in Hellas and the rest of the world, as well. It also
means to point out
all relevant causative and explanatory factors, and to suggest aspects for the
easing off of this
phenomenon.
Methodology: The methodology followed here is the one that concerns bibliography
reviews from worldwide scientific data bases, (Cinhal, Medline etc), using
keywords as:
cancer - suicidality, suicidal, ideation cancer. Next are sought elements of
identification,
coincidence or divergence of research results. The most important ones are
analyzed, trying to
reach general conclusions.
Results: The majority of researches show that suicide and cancer are positively
related.
Suicides and suicidal attitudes appear twice as much in people suffering from
cancer
compared to the rest of the population. In particular, there is high percentage
in male patients
of older age, suffering from malignant cancer. A major social problem is
created due to wide
spreading of the disease and its accompanying problems. Therapists and healers
are called to
cope and deal with it, along with the patients themselves, and all the health
providers.
Conclusions: The psychic answer to cancer has mainly got to do with signifying
pathology. Consequently, there is high necessity and a demanding call for
involvement and
participation of psychiatrists. Tumor psychology is a new dimension of medicine
and its
practice. It has sprung up from the needs of cancer patients and documents the
complex
interventions that have been made a rule to the biopsychosocial model of the
rendering
services in health care.
