Anxiety and depression in caregivers of patients with alzheimer disease : risk factors
Summary:
Current research supports the belief that the caregivers of patients who suffer
from Alzheimer are experiencing negative emotions, such as anxiety and
depression. These emotions are extensively researched in the international
literature. The conduction of studies with a view to explore the burden that
caregivers are experiencing, along with its association with risk factors,
contribute to the development of programs promoting mental health, in order to
enhance the mental health of the care givers, and develop skills and management
strategies to cope with the difficulties that arise from the care of the
patient who suffers.

The purpose of this study is the recognition of vulnerability to occurrence of
anxiety and depressive symptoms in caregivers of patients with Alzheimer, who
were treated at a tertiary care unit in a residential region. 118 individuals
participated, with men comprising 28.8 % of the sample, with a mean age 60.7,
and women comprising 71.2 % of the sample, with a mean age 52.45. Demographic
data were collected, and self-administered scales were provided so as to
evaluate the degree of burden that the caregivers were experiencing.
The caregivers’ burden was associated with many sociodemographic factors. The
gender variable seems to have no statistical significance. However, living
with the patient (BDI = 0,001), health problems caregiver (BAI = 0.043) and
quality of life of the caregiver (BAI = 0,000, BDI = 0,000, HS = 0,000)
significantly affect the performance of the scales used, and are considered
precursors of anxiety and depression among vulnerable caregivers.
