Biological-genetic aspects of sexual orientation
Summary:
Sexual orientation has always been a topic of interest for the scientific
community and especially the psychiatric. The purpose of this review is to
study the results of studies considering the biological factors that are
considered to have an effect on human sexual orientation. In this particular
study we reviewed studies from the past 20 years. Whenever it was thought
necessary we included older studies, especially the ones that are considered
important for this particular subject. The search was performed in online
scientific databases (google scholar, medline, cohrane, psy-net) using key
words (sexual
orientation, homosexuality, biological factors, genetic, DNA) and also in
scientific magazines and books. From the review it was clear that there are
evidence of biological factors contributing to form a certain sexual
orientation. What is not easy to determine is whether their role is the most
important. This could be considered to be a result of our methods not being
able to detect them.
