Industrial waste and the impacts on the environment and human health
Summary:
The issue of managing of industrial wastes, and especially their disposal on
the environment, is very complex due to the variety present in terms of the
qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The result of bad waste
management, which is often accompanied by uncontrolled disposal, is the
challenge of pollution in water, air and soil with all its negative effects for
the environment and therefore to human health. The aim of this study is to
investigate the environmental impact and the impact on human health arising
from waste specific industries: 1) Metal Finishing and Metal Plating and 2)
Industry of paper and pulp. In particular, in the context of the study the
following will be analyzed: general qualitative characteristics (pollutants) of
waste normally produced by these industries, how these pollutants can leach
into water and soil, but also the result of exposure to these pollutants on
human health. Finally, it investigates the current situation in Greece compared
with those produced by the industries and the waste management policy applied.
