Summary:
The purpose of the study was to investigate through the literature review, the
emotional reactions of the spouses, whose women were diagnosed with breast
cancer. In recent decades, the attention of scholars turned to the impact of
breast cancer in women without referring extensively to spouses. Through these
studies the need to investigate the spouse’s role began to emerge.
The review revealed the importance of emotional reactions of spouses in the
woman's process of adaptation to illness. Studies show that the emotional
support of her husband is an important factor for the positive treatment of the
disease and contributes to better treatment and outcome of the disease. In the
case of mastectomy, the wife is in a physical and emotional amputation because
of the importance of the breast for the female identity and femininity. These
effects appear to significantly affect the mental health of both the woman and
her husband and in this respect breast cancer is known as the “couple's
disease”. The mode of communication appears to become negative for the majority
of couples since the husband prefers to avoid and remove anything that causes
tension in the marital relationship and to the quality of life of the couple.
The expansion of our knowledge of stressors responsible for the psychological
distress of spouses helps implement therapeutic interventions for their
psychological support and the improvement of the quality of life of the
couple. In addition, the study highlights the importance of turning the medical
community to family members as well given that they affect and are affected by
the disease, and confirms the adoption of the biopsychosocial model.
