Summary:
Objective: Has been shown in several studies that the levels of certain tumor
markers are increased in patients with COPD. Additionally, it is known
inflammatory biomarkers are increased in exacerbation of COPD. The aim of this
study is primarily to measure the mean values of tumor markers CEA, CA19-9,
CA125, NSE and CYFRA21-1 and to investigate whether a correlation exists
between them and the inflammatory biomarkers CRP, ESR and WBC, in patients with
exacerbation of COPD who belong in groups of severity C and D by GOLD. The
second objective is to compare the results between the groups of study.
Material and Methods: Fifty-two patients with exacerbation of COPD were
included, were classified in the severity group of the COPD, C and D based on
spirometric classification by GOLD, the number of exacerbations in the previous
year and the assessment of symptoms, using the mMRC questionnaire. Results:
Mean values of CEA and CA125 were increased in group D. In patients of group C,
there was a statistically significant correlation between the levels of CRP and
CA125 (p=0,05). In patients of group D, there was a statistically significant
correlation between the number of WBC and NSE (p=0,02), between the levels of
CRP and CA19-9 (p=0,02) and the NSE (p<0,001) and between the ESR and NSE
(p=0,03). The mean values of CA125 (p=0,01) and CA19-9 (p=0,01) were
statistically significantly higher in group D compared with group C.
Conclusion: In the exacerbation of COPD mean values of certain tumor markers
were increased while others aren’t affected. Also, it emerged that certain
tumor markers associated with elevated inflammatory biomarkers and severity of
disease.
