Introduction: Intensive Care Units are a particularly stressing workplace
conducive to the development of psychological disorders. Studies investigating
anxiety and depression symptoms in Hellenic nursing staff (NS) of Adult and
Pediatric Intensive Care Units (ICU) are limited.
Aim: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the existence and
severity of anxiety and depression symptoms of NS Adult and Pediatric ICUs, as
well as the associations with demographic, social and employment
characteristics of the sample.
Material and methods: The sample consisted of 394 NS working in Adult and
Pediatric ICUs. For the assessment of anxiety and depression scale were used
Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and
Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. Statistical analysis of data was performed
using the statistical package SPSS 19.0
Results: The results of this study indicated that levels of anxiety and
depression of NS was normal (mean SAS = 39.21 mean SDS = 46.15) and there were
not observed statistically significant correlation between adult and pediatric
ICUs compared. However there was a statistically significant correlation
between demographic data and SAS and SDS
Conclusion: NS of ICU Adult and Pediatric seems to feel normal range of anxiety
and depression. However there were observed some factors associated with the
occurrence of these psychological disorders. These should be considered by the
administration of hospitals to maintain a supportive environment for the
nursing staff in the ICU.
