Summary:
Introduction: Heart diseases are one of the most common reasons of death in
Greece. They constitute a severe obstacle in human’s life while their negative
effect is visible in everyday activities.
Aim: The aim of this research is to study whether and in what extent the
quality of life of patients with heart problems is associated with the
demographic characteristics.Another purpose is to investigate whether the
patients’ quality of life has changed one month after the hospitalization and
to compare it with the quality of life of the general population.
Material and Methods: This research was conducted between February and December
2011 when 98 patients were personally interviewed. The research took place at
the cardiology section of the Hospital «Η Σωτηρία». The personal interview
lasted about 15 minutes on each patient. For this study, the Health Survey
questionnaire SF-36 was used.
Results: The results of the research show that the heart disease affected
negatively the quality of life of the patients, while the improvement that
noticed after one month is of great importance. From the eight parameters of
SF-36, the Role Physical and Role Emotional had the greatest improvement, in
contrast with the General Health that had the worst.
Discussion: The quality of life of the patients was seriously affected by the
disease, but still it showed great improvement one month after the
hospitalization. Their quality of life is also low, if compared with the
healthy population, but tends to them after one month.
Conclusions: Heart problems have a great impact on a patients’ quality of life.
After the proper addressing of the problem, it can be greatly improved and tend
to the quality of life of the healthy population.
