Stress management program for caregivers of people with dementia- Randomized controlled trial
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of a stress
management program in caregivers of people with dementia. The specific
objectives of this research were to reduce the levels of stress, anxiety and
depressive symptoms in caregivers of people with dementia. A sample of 44
caregivers of people with dementia were randomized to an intervention group (n
= 22) and a control group (n = 22). Participants in the intervention group were
given information about stress, the importance of diet, exercise and routine in
coping with everyday stressors. In addition, they were given the following
relaxation techniques: diaphragmatic breathing and progressive muscle
relaxation (1st session), guided imaginary (3rd session), autogenic training
(Session 5). The stress management program was lasted eight weeks. The results
showed that perceived stress, caregiver stress, anxiety as a trait and
depressive symptoms decreased in the intervention group compared with the
control group, as a result of the influence of the stress management program (p
<0.05). The findings of this study suggest that the stress management program
that implemented can effectively reduce stress, depressive symptoms and anxiety
in caregivers of patients with dementia.
