Impementation of critical incident stress management -CISM- program to air traffic controllers
Summary:
The Air Traffic Controllers’ occupation is considered highly demanding,
entailing high levels of responsibility and stress, especially due to critical
incidents such as conflicts and accidents, in which they are involved while
performing their duties. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is being
implemented by organizations and high risk occupations, aiming to moderate the
reactions of critical incident stress. A thorough search of the literature was
conducted to examine the effectiveness of CISM in an Air Traffic Controllers
environment, and the role it can play in the promotion of mental health and
prevention of mental disorders. Although the research is characterized by
controversial outcomes in preventing PTSD and mitigating its symptoms, there
are indications of usefulness in improving the job climate, cohesion and
support, reducing absenteeism in a cost-effective manner for the organization.
