Original Title:
Summary:
Purpose. Aim of the present study was to investigate any associations between
HDL levels above 70 mg/dl and target organ damage in first diagnosed and never
treated hypertensive patients.
Methods. We measured HDL in 251 first diagnosed untreated hypertensive patients
with essential hypertension (101 women, 150 men). Subsequently, we estimated
the following indices of target organ damage: pulse wave velocity,
microalbuminuria, left ventricular mass index, coronary flow reserve and
intima-media thickness.
Results. Regarding total population, 33 patients (27 women, 6 men) had HDL
levels >70 mg/dl. Subsequently, hypertensive population was divided in four
groups: A. men with HDL>70 mg/dl (n=6), B. men with HDL<70 mg/dl (n=144), C.
women with HDL>70 mg/dl (n=27) and D. women with HDL<70 mg/dl (n=74). Ιn a
model including age, BMI and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, HDL levels
were independently associated with IMT in group C.
Conclusions. High levels of HDL (ranged between 70 and 100 mg/dl) may predict
the absence of carotid atherosclerosis in middle-age women with first diagnosed
and untreated essential hypertension and consequently contribute in total
cardiovascular risk estimation and treatment plan.
