Electronic health records in disasters: systematic review
Summary:
Abstract
Over the past decade the use of electronic health records has become quite
common, as more health organizations start to adopt them, taking advantage of
the plethora benefits they offer. Also, there is ongoing body of evidence in
the literature that support the benefits that the use of these health records
contribute to disasters. The purpose of this study is to investigate the
contribution of them in various occasions of disasters. For this purpose, 27
studies were investigated in order to determine the use of electronic medical
records systems to disasters. The majority of these studies were disasters that
took place in the United States, while 3 studies concerned disasters in Haiti
and 2 studies in Japan. In conclusion, we strongly believe that these systems
offer significantly before, during and after the disaster and their use in such
cases is recommended.
