Summary:
Pregnancy constitutes a period during which the pregnant woman experiences
intense physical and psychological changes with important interactions between
them. Antenatal depression comprises a major health issue that is greatly
underdiagnosed, despite its effects on both the woman and her fetus. Moreover,
it has been considerably less studied than postpartum depression. The aim of
the present study is to assess the biopsychosocial factors that are associated
with it. The present study constitutes a cross-sectional study with a sample of
100 pregnant women. The following questionnaires and scales were administered:
a demographic and pregnancy data questionnaire, EPDS, PHQ-15, SSQ-6,
WHOQoL-BREF. Overall, 11/100 women were (probably) depressed. Associated risk
factors were: PHQ-15 score 15, fetus sex (female), 1st trimester of pregnancy
and being divorced. Depressed women showed higher somatic symptomatology, lower
quality of life in every domain and reported lower levels of social support.
Higher somatic symtomatology was associated with lower quality of life in most
domains, while higher levels of satisfaction from the available social support
were associated with higher quality of life in every domain. Fatigue and
problems with the sleep that constitute diagnostic criteria for depression were
among the 5 most common somatic symptoms for all pregnant women. The results
highlight the complex interactions between physical, psychological and social
factors, as well as the difficulties in diagnosing antenatal depression, due to
the normal somatic symptoms of pregnancy. At the same time, they emphasize the
importance of adopting a holistic, biopsychosocial approach of the pregnant
woman as well as interventions that aim to the overall improvement of their
quality of life.
