Summary:
Fibroadenoma is the most common benign neoplasm of the breast. It is usually
diagnosed around 20-30 years old and it appears as a palpable, movable and
painless mass. Diagnosis often occurs with clinical evaluation only but in
cases with no symptoms, the tumor can be observed in ultrasound, mammography
screening or even better in biopsy or MRI. In most cases, fibroadenomas are not
surgically excised and a rather conventional policy of management is preferred.
Fibroadenomas are believed to get smaller in size or even disappear when years
pass by. On the contrast, phyllodes tumors, that share many clinical and
histological characteristics with fibroadenomas, are usually diagnosed 20 years
later and can grow in size suddenly and metastasize in distanced tissues. There
are studies that report wrong diagnosis of phyllodes tumor that was confused
with fibroadenoma.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity of clinical tests
in accordance with the results from histopathological tests. The participants
in this study are 254 women diagnosed with fibroadenoma between 2007-2013.
From the results, it is obvious that a percentage of 9.4% was wrongly
diagnosed and women that were thought to have fibroadenomas according to
clinical evaluation, turned out that had phyllodes tumor. In addition, women
who had mother or sisters with breast cancer, was more likely to have phyllodes
tumor.
