Study of the effect of an exercise protocol of the pelvic floor muscles in incontinence and in voiding parameters in women before and after menopause
Summary:
Subject: Urinary incontinence concerns a large part of the female population.
The pelvic floor exercises have been shown to reduce the severity of
incontinence or to cure it completely. In this survey we asked healthy
volunteers but also volunteers with little incontinent to perform a
rehabilitation program for 8 weeks, without the presence of the therapist.
Methods: Participants were female before and after menopause. From the voiding
diary, that was completed by the women, we saw improvement in voiding
parameters such as quantity per micturition, and the number of visits to the
toilet. Also for the improvement of incontinence we used the ICIQ-SF
questionnaire and a personal questionnaire that we made specifically for our
research.
Results: Of all the women who participated in the program, 38% had no symptoms
of incontinence and stayed that way, 29% was cured and 33% continued to have
incontinence after the program, but showed great improvement.
Conclusions: The conclusions are that a rehabilitation program can be applied
as a treatment and as a prevention even without the presence of the therapist.
