Summary:
Special Physical Education (SPE) contributes to the improvement of physical
and mental health, as well it promotes sociability and inclusion of children
with
Mental Retardation (MR) in school and social environment. Given that SPE is an
important course, the present study aims to investigate attitudes and opinions
of 55
teachers from inclusion classes and special secondary education schools
regarding
their perceptions about the effect of SPE and inclusion of adolescents with MR.
Teachers’ attitudes and opinions are of great importance, as they have a key
role in
the success of inclusion process. The results showed that teachers consider SPE
as a
very important course, which promotes physical and mental health, self-esteem,
sociability and other important skills. With regard to inclusion, although
teachers
appeared to have positive attitude towards inclusion, in practice they seemed to
support special school as the best educational structure for students with MR.
