Translation and validation of the Kingston Caregiver Stress Scale in the Greek population
Summary:
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by reduced social
interaction and communication, as well as reduced, repeated and stereotypical
behaviour. Individuals caring for a relative who suffers from a chronic
pathological condition are facing a challenge which can lead to a strong and
persistent stressful situation. Levels of stress can be high in families caring
for a child suffering from autism and therefore a tool measuring the levels of
stress can be useful for the health professionals. The aim of this research is
the translation in Greek and validation on caregivers of children with autism
in Greece of the Kingston Caregiver Stress Scale (KCSS), a scale for measuring
the stress experienced by caregivers. For the validation of the scale a total
of 110 questionnaires were filled by parents of children diagnosed with autism.
The participants are residents of major cities in Greece and Cyprus. For the
evaluation of the validity of the scale we have performed criterion validity
analysis using as criteria the scales Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Zarit
Burden Interview (ZBI) and Stress Factors. Based on the results a strong
positive statistically significant link (r=+0,633-0,758***) between the scale
under validation and the three criteria. The KCSS therefore appears to have
criterion validity.
