Summary:
Delirium is a complex neuropsychiatric condition that occurs quite frequently
in surgical patients.
The object to evaluate the profile of postopertive delirium symproms ,the
factors affecting the delirium,the response of delirium and each individual
delirium symptom seperately to medication and finally the factors associated
with the response of delirium to medication.The sample included 30
inpaitentsthat had undergone surgery.The tools used were
CAM,DRS-R-98,IQCODE,CS-GDS,CIRS.For the data nalysis the SPSS software package
was used.The most frquently observed symptoms were hallucination. Also, 80% of
the patients responsed to medication and 60% of them achieved full recovery.
Significant improvement showed on symptoms of sleep disturbance and attention
disorder.Least eliminatioin showed on symptoms of long -term memory
disorder,impaired sleep-wake cycleand ipaired short term memory.In our study
the prolonged waiting time for the surgery,the depression ,severe
cormobidity,thepolypharmacy,the total duration of smoking and the pre-existing
dementia were the most significaln risk faactors for the development of
delirium. Depression,serious comorbidity .and pre-existing dementia were the
most significant factors that effect the response of delirium to treatment and
were statistically significantly associated with severe delirium.
