Quality of life among patients with heart assist devices.
Summary:
Heart failure is a clinical syndrome with extremely important morbidity and
mortality. The incidence of heart failure is increasing rapidly over the past
decade and as the donor hearts for transplantation continue to be limited in
number, it is important to focus on alternative therapeutic options. The use of
ventricular assist devices (VADs) has become a widely accepted therapeutic
option in the end-stage cardiac failure. Implantation of ventricular assist
devices is used as a bridging procedure to heart transplantation, as a bridge
to recovery and more increasingly as a destination therapy for those who
otherwise may not be able to receive or qualify for heart transplantation.
Methods: Subjects enrolled in this study were 31 adult patients who had
undergone mechanical circulatory VAD implantation. As instruments to measure
quality of life with implantable ventricular assist devices, each patient
completed three questionnaires. The first questionnaire involves the device
management, the second was the living with heart failure KANSAS questionnaire
and the third involves demographic characteristics. All patients were
interviewed and completed all questionnaires by themselves.
Results: Family status and educational level were independently associated
aspects of quality of life in patients with heart failure. It also appears that
the sex, age and type of the implantable ventricular assist device can affect
the quality of life among these patients.
Conclusions: Demographic and clinical characteristics are associated aspects of
quality of life among patients with implantable ventricular assist devices.
