Summary:
Aim of this study is to detect the expression of Integrin, E-Cadherin and
Vimentin in healthy endometrium, adenomyosis, ovarian endometriotic cysts and
endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovaries.
Materials and Methods: Sections of biopsy samples of normal endometrium
(proliferative and secretory) after hysterectomy for leiomyomas (n=20),
sections of adenomyosis (20),ovarian endometriotic cysts (n=20) and
endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovaries (n=20). For the immunohistochemical
staining, the following antibodies were used: 1) anti- Integrin theDako,
DenmarkP1E6, P1B5, 2) anti- Ε-Cadherin Cell Marque, ECH-6 and 3)
anti-Vimentinthe Μοnosan, V9.
Results: All molecules tested could be detected in healthy endometrium samples
independent of the cyclus phase. In adenomyosis the results were exactly the
same as in the healthy endometrium. In ovarian endometriotic cysts all
molecules except E-Cadherin were in similar way expressed as in healthy
endometrium. The expression of E-Cadherin in these cases was decreased. In
endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovaries the expression of Integrin and
E-Cadherin was decreased and that of Vimentin unchanged in comparison with
healthy endometrium. All molecules tested were expressed in Grade I and none of
them in Grade III endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovaries. In Grade II a
positive reaction was detected only by Vimentin in 3 samples.
Conclusion: Integrin, E-Cadherin and Vimentin may have a role in the
pathophysiology of adenomyosis, endometriosis and endometrioid adenocarcinoma
of the ovaries. However, further investigation is warranted in order to better
understand the molecular events of these diseases and to develop an
etiologically-based medical management.
