Summary:
Safe transfusions have a critical role in modern medicine as more treatments
and surgeries take place as time goes by.
Blood donation in Greece is based on volunteering. Quality and safety standards
for human blood have been established, in order to ensure a high level of human
health protection by collecting, processing, testing and storaging blood and
its derivatives in the right way.
Tests used in routine blood screening, ‘recognize’ viral antigens or
antibodies , but not the virulence factors itself .
The main method used in detecting posttransfusion diseases is the
chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA), while the confirmatory test
for a positive anti-HCV, anti-HIV I / II and anti-HTLV I / II sample is based
on immunoblotting techniques (Western Blot) .
Although HBV transmission can not be eliminated, new laboratory tests with high
sensitivity and specificity, such as Immunoassays (ΕΙΑs) & Nucleic acid
amplification technology (NAT) in combination with massive vaccination can be
used to prevent PT-HB or detect occult hepatitis b.
