Summary:
The etiology of craniomandibular disorders seems to be multifactorial.
Occlusion has definitely been one of the factors being extensively studied. Some
researchers defend the role of occlusion as a predisposing factor for the
development
of craniomandibular disorders and as a therapeutical mean for them. On the other
hand, others believe and prove, based on circumstantial studies, that occlusion
is a
causative factor of minor importance for the emergence of these disorders and
that it
must not be involved in the treatment of them. References in the literature
seem to be
controversial and vague regarding the correlation existing between occlusal
factors
and the development of clinical signs and symptoms of dysfunction of the
stomatognathic system.
Purpose. The aim of the study is to evaluate the correlation between occlusal
factors and clinical signs and symptoms of dysfunction of the stomatognathic
system.
Materials and methods. Material comprised patients, with evidence of
dysfunction of the stomatognathic system, attending undergraduate and
postgraduate
Clinic of Orofacial Pain Management in the Dental School of National and
Kapodistrian University of Athens, for the treatment of the craniomandibular
disorder.
Patients were thoroughly examined according to the protocol followed by the
Clinic
of Orofacial Pain Management, aiming to the verification of the evidence of
dysfunction of the stomatognathic system, while occlusion recordings were
carried
out. Afterwards, a correlation was made based on the statistical analysis of
the results between occlusal factors and signs and symptoms of dysfunction of
the
stomatognathic system.

Results. Results of the study show that no significant statistically correlation
exists between the occlusal parameters being analyzed and signs and symptoms of
dysfunction of the Stomatognathic System
Conclusions. In this study the multifactorial etiology of TMD’s is being
reinforced, based on the weak correlation proved between various occlusal
parameters
and Stomatognathic System dysfunction
Nevertheless, further study is required concerning this issue with a larger
sample of patients, with a group of healthy individuals without signs and
symptoms of
dysfunction as a control group, with recordings of more occlusal parameters and
after
the conservative treatment of TMD’s
