Summary:
Aim: To assess the association of bruxism with alterations in the
stomatognathic system and the emotional state of children during dental
treatment and at rest, by using psychometric and hormonal approaches.
Associations of bruxism with demographic parameters were also investigated.
Methods: The sample consisted of 54 children (92 months, sd = 27 months) at the
bruxism group and 65 children (93 months, sd = 22 months) at control group, who
attended the Postgraduate Clinic of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of
Athens. Children’s trait anxiety, medical/dental history and socioeconomic
family status were recorded through questionnaires. The clinical assessment
included examination of the masseter muscle thickness, bite force and the
recording of oral status. Saliva cortisol levels were determined through a
total of five saliva samples. Several statistical tests were used for the
statistical analysiw. As cortisol values did not follow a normal distribution,
logarithmic transformation was applied to normalize them. Univariable and
multivariable logistic regression analysis was implemented in order to evaluate
potential associations between bruxism and various parameters. The level of
statistical significance was set at p 0.05. Results-Conclusions: Significant
associations of bruxism were detected with bite force and the thickness of
masseter muscle during contraction and relaxation. Children's bruxism was also
significantly associated with parental bruxism and the parental report of
child's anxiety. No significant association of cortisol levels or anxiety state
with bruxism were found. It is concluded that there is some evidence for
association of children's bruxism with the physiology of the stomatognathic
system and the family environment.
