Summary:
This thesis highlights the main features and the operational requirements of
the Smart Grid, as well as to overview the main challenges and open issues
related to its successful implementation in the next years. Based on this
overview, we focus on the communication part of the Smart Grid emphasizing on
the secure and reliable transfer of information among the different networking
technologies and tiers supporting Smart Grid communications. To this end, in
the remainder of the thesis we present the main challenges for safeguarding the
communications performed over the Smart Grid communication infrastructure and
focus on the impact of two prominent attacks of the Smart Grid network: the
blackhole and the jamming attack. A key contribution of our work is the
development of a new model and the derivation of closed-form expressions that
describe the negative impact following from the joint employment of blackhole
and jamming attacks on the coverage probability experienced by the
communication-enabled Smart Grid equipment. Based on the derived expressions,
we propose novel countermeasures to mitigate the side effects of the joint
presence of black holes and jammers in the Smart Grid and provide important
analytical tools to estimate the coverage probability in such occasions.
