Summary:
This study presents a multiplex PCR assay for the simultaneous detection of the
five Haemophilus influenzae serotypes (a, c, d, e and f) in clinical samples of
patients with meningitis/bacteremia due to that microorganism (blood,
cerebrospinal fluid). The sensitivity and the specificity were calculated to
100o/o. The overall effectiveness permits the rapid, accurate and inexpensive
detection of the five H. influenzae serotypes directly in clinical samples. It
is potentially a valuable tool for diagnosis and epidemiological monitoring of
disease due to H. influenzae.
