Summary:
The Web has become part of our life. The web accessibility remains an important
issue because of the problems that exist in access for disabled users. The
Universities and Technological Institutions use the Internet for various
reasons, and therefore, their sites must be accessible to all. The sites that
are not accessible may exclude people with disabilities from participating in
educational, social and professional activities.
The paper presents the results of the evaluation of the level of accessibility
of all the Greek Universities and Technological Educational Institutes. The
sample tested was five pages for each university and ATEI. Specifically had
been examined the pages: home page, departments, library, news, Telephone
Directory (with search form). The control of accessibility was using multiple
techniques and methods, based on recommendations of the World Wide Web
Consortium. Each site was analyzed for compliance with accessibility standards,
accessibility to images, the use of alternative language and content, and
general quality of websites for accessibility.
