Development of an educational software entitled:From Marathon to Thermopylae, based on the fossil record of Pikermi region, Attica, Greece
Summary:
The present thesis concerns the development of a multimedia software entitled
“From Marathon to Thermopylae”. The main purpose was to create an opulent
hypermedia material which will contribute to the teaching of Evolutional
theory, based on the curriculum integration approach of learning. In order to
achieve these teaching objectives, what is required is active student
participation on the basis of the principles of discovery and co-operative
learning. The aim is that the students will discover the basic principles of
the theory of Evolution by means of natural selection, by positioning the
concept of evolution in a spatial and temporal frame of reference: starting
from the Greek-Persian wars ( the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C and the Battle
of Thermopylae in 480 B.C) and connecting the historical events with the modern
location of Pikermi, where the fossils were first discovered in the 19th
century (1835). This will be achieved through an easy-to-use and friendly
environment interface and under the guidance of an appropriate educational
scenario that would be developed in class by the teacher. The steps for the
software development included the establishment of teaching objectives which
were fully harmonized with the curriculum, collecting the multimedia material
as well as selecting the constructive tools. From a technical point of view,
the software was developed by the means of a suitable multimedia application
authoring tool, called Multimedia Builder, freely available on the internet.
The application is distributed in an optical disc in an executable file format
(.exe)
