Summary:
The purpose of this research is to investigate the Pedagogical Content
Knowledge (PCK) in the theme of the chemical reaction. PCK includes knowledge
of the subject, of student difficulties and of teaching strategies. The sample
consists of six experienced and six inexperienced teachers. Three data
collection tools were used: a lesson plan, an open questionnaire and a
semistructured interview. The qualitative method of analysis was used for the
data procession. Initially, open coding of the data was applied to establish
codes for the similar responses. Then, axial coding was applied, in which the
codes emerged from the data were redefined and specific dimensions resulted.
The dimension enhancement was studied by three research tools (triangulation).
Finally, for each research question, the incidence of these dimensions in the
responses was investigated; possible differentiation in experienced and
inexperienced teachers was examined. For the knowledge of the subject, six
dimensions were found: the everyday life, the macroscopic, the microscopic, the
symbolic, the energy and the experiments. For the students’ difficulties three
dimensions were found: the macroscopic, the microscopic and symbolic. For the
teaching strategies seven dimensions were found: experiments, the students’
level, teaching tools, interdisciplinary, teaching objectives, the teaching
methods and the student participation.
