Summary:
This study was carried out in the form of questionnaires handed to senior high
school grade B and C students. The questions covered aspects taught in senior
high school grade A during the 2010-2011 school year. The study aims at the
investigation of student alternative ideas especially related to the
stoichiometry of reactions and the behavior of acids and bases as
well, based to the fact that the main reaction that students are taught
is neutralization.
Despite the fact that enough time is dedicated to the teaching of redox and
metathesis reactions, students apply mechanistic ways for solving the problems,
a fact depriving them of the ability to understand the phenomena in depth.
According to our results, students face serious problems in understanding the
meaning of chemical reaction as well as in distinguishing the meanings of acid
- base - salt. The main difficulties are related to the understanding of the
principle of mass conservation and the understanding of the nature and
structure of the molecules taking part in a reaction; the most dramatic problem
relates to the formulating of chemical reactions.
Finally some processes, didactic, experimental and authoring are proposed in
order to improve the effects of teaching the above aspects.
