Important advances in the development of technological tools useful in the
teaching process, on the one hand, and extensive use of statistical data to
support every kind of information provided to the public on the other, drive
education toward aiming at graduates capable of estimating and evaluating a
wide range of statistical information. Due to this, in the present
dissertation, planning and implementing a teaching approach for high school
students using the software TinkerPlots was attempted. Guided by the relevant
literature that mentions the need for and usefulness of similar interventions
and under the viewpoint of the constructivist theory of knowledge construction
we set the goal of exploring the capability of developing statistical concepts
in students who participated in this kind of teaching approach. The
participants were high school students who handled a worksheet of data formed
on TinkerPlots, each one at their own individual laptop. The students answered
questions concerning statistical concepts and at the end of the teaching
session they also answered questions about their attitude to the teaching
method employed and the field of statistics. These answers demonstrated that
the students were able to develop statistical concepts and handle them
adequately. In addition, that, to a large extent, they were interested in
looking further into these concepts.
