Alternative conceptions of high school students about the atomic theory
Summary:
This work reports the results of a survey conducted during the school year 2011
- 2012, through the distribution of questionnaire on a group of 1613 students
attending the second and third grade of senior high school. The purpose of the
research is to investigate and evaluate students' alternative conceptions, the
reasons of their creation and maintenance, and the degree of students'
understanding of concepts related to the atom, which are taught at the first
grade in senior high school.
The survey included schools from large and small urban centers, rural areas and
“special” schools such as musical, intercultural and ecclesiastical in order to
establish a representative sample stratification of students in the country.
The results of the research are reported in detail in the fourth chapter. A
statistical analysis of the sample perby school category, by gender and class
of students participated is attempted. The aim is to record the percentage of
correct answers for the above categories and related the understanding of the
corresponding concepts of each specified student category.
A summary of the results is presented as well as some conclusions and proposals
to improve teaching and thereby reduce and eliminate alternative conceptions
related to the atom.
