Summary:
Nowadays, it has become necessary to connect chemistry to everyday life. This
is because, one of the objectives of the teaching process is to attract
students’ interest and help them alter the negative attitude they have, towards
the subject of chemistry. According to the bibliography, efforts have been made
to combine the teaching of Chemistry concepts with aspects of students’
everyday life. This paper focuses on patisserie products. So candies were used
to design and implement a research study. The purpose of this study was to
connect chemistry to students’ everyday life. More specifically, we
concentrated on the substances that can be found in candies and processes that
take place during their preparation.
We initially studied the contents of high school books of Chemistry, Biology
and Home Economics, in order to examine whether candies are used as an example
in the teaching of basic Chemistry concepts. Then, we formed a questionnaire
comprising 27 knowledge questions divided into 9 main exercises. We initially
measured the reliability and validity of the questions, by giving the
questionnaire in a small sample of 18 students. The main study involved 105
students in the second grade of high school. Finally, based on the results of
the statistical processing of the students’ answers, we suggested several
activities and experiments based on the theory of constructivism, which can be
used in the teaching process of basic concepts of Chemistry.
