Summary:
In the present postgraduate specialized thesis are presented the results of
dating, are determined the petrological and geochemical characteristics of
samples from Kos-Nisyros Volcanic center which is located in the volcanic arc
of South Aegean Sea. The dating was realised with the luminescence dating
,which is an important technique for the chronological determination, and
specifically, with optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) method. In
particular, it was determined if the luminescence characteristics of quartz and
K-feldspars, which were retrieved from these formations can be applied for
dating. Blue LED light was used for the stimulation of luminescence from
quartzs, while infrared light was used to produce luminescence signals from
K-feldspars, which usually emit high level signals. So, the samples of Nisyros
, Kos and Yali island are about 16-44 ka, 3,6- 8,3 ka and 10-20 ka,
respectively. Also, the mineralogical analysis showed that the main mineral
phases of formations are quartz, illite, halloysite, albite and gismondine.
The geochemical analysis of major and trace elements showed that the samples
(formations) are ryolithic, dacitic and belong to calc-alkaline series.
Furthermore, Si ranges from 65 to 80%, Fe ranges from 1,39 to 3,70%, Mg ranges
from 0,53 to 1,21% and Al ranges from 7,33 to 14,79%. The trace element of Sr
has positive association with Ca due to substitution for Sr during the
crystallization of plagioclases.
Finally, in the current study, paleo-environmental characteristics of Nisyros
island was determined with the interpretation of the coastal vulnerability
index of itself.
