Summary:
The topic of this project is the study of the prehistoric ceramic of the Zagani
settlement which aims at defining the mineralogical and chemical
characteristics of the ceramic material and at the same time, at investigating
the possibility of tracing the region of argila’s (raw material) origin/mining
(identification). This argila was used for the construction of pots and the
understanding of the constructional procedure of ceramic pots which the pot
maker is assumed to have followed in ancient times. The ceramic studied
originates from the prehistoric settlement of Zagani (S.E. of Attica) which was
excavated in 1997, during the construction of Athens International Airport “El.
Venizelos”. It concerns uninvestigated parts of pots from the Early Era of
Copper (2800-2500 B.C.) originating from dated layers of the excavation, which
were handed to me, after application, from the B’ Trusteeship Curator of
Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, Dr. George Steinhauer.
