Study of characteristics and estimation of atmospheric boundary layer depth over Crete using lidar
Summary:
The object of this thesis is the estimation of the mixing height of the
atmospheric boundary layer over Crete with the use of lidar techniques. Lidar
measurements have been received in summer of 2014 by the National Observatory
of Athens. The data that have been collected from Raman lidar and the
elastically back scattered signal of a pulsed laser (1064 nm). The estimation
of the mixing height is based on the fact that the aerosol concentration is
much higher at levels below the mixing height. The results showed as that the
mixing height can’t be estimated by lidar at all cases, especially when dust is
transported from Africa to Crete. The technique works well at the cases of
medium wind speed during day time. For the better analysis of the results, the
mixing height has been estimated also by a numerical model and radiosondes.
